Awesome class and teachers, really friendly vibe and staff. We covered so much ground on the theory and practice of photography! I definitely recommend Sydney Photographic Workshop for anyone starting out photography and/or looking to strengthen in a specific photography style!

It might be too long for some of you but since you have invested the time to look for reviews, you might as well spend few extra minutes reading one which is more than “I had a great time, money well spent, highly recommend ” We have all been there: Google search, YouTube tutorials etc. And it is fine to get basic knowledge, basic information on the internet. Mind you, even with that you have to be prepared to spend time rejecting 90% of the content provided by kids talking about gear (btw; if you are a kid interested in gear, this course is not for you). Then one day you have enough and you type in Google: photographic workshops. If you are lucky like myself and thousands before me, you will come across Daniel and his workshop. I can not tell you enough good things about this 8 weeks long workshop. To start with; its format. The fact that it lasts 2 hours at the time is fantastic because it keeps you interested without your brain being saturated with new and often foreign information. And if you are older: like myself; remembering too much is always an issue. Then there is question of information and knowledge you are being provided with. Daniel is a fountain of knowledge. You probably looked up his credentials so I won’t go into that. But face to face, Daniel is a fantastic tutor with vast knowledge, great personality and positive demeanour. We know from our academic years that some teachers could not pass their knowledge to students. This is not the case with Daniel. His approach to providing us with information was easy to understand yet extremely informative. Easy to remember “pearls of wisdom” made some of more complicated aspects of photography a breeze. Every now and then you were hit with this ball of lightning “aaaa, so this is why….” Your own “decisive moment”. And if you still had problems with understanding; Daniel was too happy to answer any questions and explain patiently until the issue was no longer an issue. I can’t say if I’m a better photographer now but what I know is that Daniel has equipped me with the knowledge to become one. Now it is all up to me to remember and practice what I was taught. And it is easy to remember: even for me: because of the way information were presented during the course. Thank you, Daniel: you have gave me so much useful information and your constructive critique of some of my photos made me improve the way I take pictures now. Thank you, Wendy, for being the perfect organiser who ensured that everything was running like clockwork.

The 8 week beginner’s course is fantastic. After the first couple of lessons I already understood so much more about how my camera works. This course has changed the way I look at photography. Not only have I found out how to use my camera properly but I also understand how and why every element comes together to make a good photo. Daniel has a wealth of experience and knowledge in photography and shares this information in a way that is easily understood. He is always happy to answer questions and make suggestions for improvement. As a ‘beginner’ beginner, I was nervous about doing this course. Eight weeks later, I am not only now friends with my camera, but my love and interest in photography has grown so much. The course was exemplary in every way, from Wendy’s wonderfully responsive emails to Daniel’s generous and inspirational sharing of his extensive knowledge with such clarity and patience. Both are real people who clearly love and are very good at what they do. I am a slow learner, but came so far with this course. Excellent value for money and highly recommended.

Photography has been a kind of sub-hobby for me. I must have taken a good 15,000 photos over the course of my life, but I had no idea that it was such a scientific pursuit. These classes took me back in one sense to craft classes at school, where I was routinely the slowest and the clumsiest. Wendy and Daniel were endlessly patient. And looking through my portfolio from the course…Hey! some of them were pretty good!

Thoroughly enjoyed the course. Learned so much about my cameras, what they could do it was a real eye opener.

I can now grab the camera and take photos confident that I will get great photos because I now understand all the settings and functions,

I now look at a “scene” with a different eye as I learned about light and how to use light.

Friends and family have made comment about how my photos have improved.

    Daniel and Wendy were fabulous.

Recommend the 8 week course for anyone with a camera.

Course attended: 8 Weeks Beginners Photography Course My starting point: Very little previous knowledge of DSLR camera use. I appreciate that Daniel portioned his lessons well. He did not overwhelm us with the information at the start. Rather, he trickled his knowledge so that we could absorb it and use it practically straight away. Doing so, it allowed us to build good knowledge base and gradually build on it. He taught us to be confident with a camera from the very beginning focusing only on a feature discussed at the class. We did not have to fear the ‘big camera’ at all. Bit by bit, we gained a pool of practical skills allowing us to take pictures at various times of a day. In stages, we would learn what all the settings and buttons mean and are for in a practical way. He did not only teach us how to produce a presentable photo but also be confident with that DSLR camera. Upon completion of the course I am now able to grab the DSLR camera with confidence, take pictures, can adjust settings, actually knowing what is needed, with no stress or doubts. Frankly, great value for money, great content, great vibes and most importantly you gain practical skills. Best course to take if you want to learn to use DSLR camera with confidence.

I have just completed my 8 week beginner photography workshop with Daniel as my tutor. I didn’t think the day would come when I could venture off auto to manual settings, and confidently capture memories and photos that I didn’t think were possible for a home photographer.

Daniel’s knowledge, passion and teaching skills are second to none. Each class subject was explained simply, patiently and individually to each student and using their own camera! The Sunday afternoon field trip was amazing, and even more tips and tricks were shown.

I found the whole team extremely friendly and flexible when it came to changing some of my days. A great course for anyone who has an interest in photography.

I absolutely loved this course and was money well spent. To finally understand how to use my camera on manual mode is something I always wanted to do, but found YouTube videos too complex to follow. The 8 week course was well set out with activities you could practice during the week to master skills such as depth of focus, composition, exposure etc.
Now I use my camera on manual mode all the time and my pictures have definitely improved, with even family and friends noticing as well.
Our tutor Sarah was fantastic, easy to talk to and very patient. The field trip she took us on bought everything we learned into practice.
Highly recommend this course to everyone who wants to learn about their camera.

This course was exactly what I needed. I had some understanding of photography, but wasn’t capturing all my camera (or editing) could do. It gave me the knowledge and forced me to go out and practice — building my skills week by week. My photos have improved, I’m always shooting in manual mode and I no longer resort to relying on my iPhone to capture the moment because shooting on my DSLR is now just as easy. I highly recommend.

Really good course, definitely worth the money and I learned a lot. I had some basic understanding of photography beforehand but I didn’t know how to handle a DSLR or apply the knowledge I already had – now I do! My camera is now exclusively on manual mode and my photos are already a couple of levels above where I started. I know what all the functions do and I know what to look for when buying equipemnt. Great course 🙂

This was an enjoyable and thorough course and I learnt a lot more than I thought I would. Even after having training in design, taking plenty of iPhone photos of the years and experimenting with a DSLR camera through trial and error and online tutorials, I still learnt so much that I didn’t know. I have gained more confidence and an even stronger love for photography after this course. Fiona is an encouraging teacher, explains things well and was welcoming of plenty of questions. The content, pace and structure of the course was great – I would highly recommend it!

For a person who always used Auto – when Frank said ‘you’ll be off the Auto mode and onto Manual mode by lesson 4’ – I just smirked. Lo and behold – I am on all modes but NOT Auto. GREAT teacher and support team at SPW. Learnt so much and the eight lessons was paced well so no student in the class was left out. I have learnt a lot and grown from the experience as a photographer. I also greatly value the 3-hr hands-on workshop with Daniel – not to be missed!!! Only one suggestion- please spend the first 15-20 minutes of each class on reviewing / providing feedback on photo tasks you set to the class as a group, so we may learn from our mistakes as we progress. I like who it covers all the basics (nobody feels stupid). Moved at a pace to match the group, covered areas we all understood quickly + spent longer on the areas we wanted more understanding.

I came into this course with no knowledge of manual use of camera or of anything else really. Now I am feeling a lot more confident and taking photographs with a completely new approach. Fiona is a great teacher. Very patient and informative and the whole atmosphere at SPW is very friendly and welcoming and it was nice to meet such interesting people also. I would definitely recommend SPW. Thank you Fiona, I am definitely more confident and enjoying my photography.

SO glad I did the Sydney Photographic Workshops full course. I now know my way around my own camera, not just general knowledge from the internet – the course is a mixture of learning, application and DIY practice which is perfect. Groups are small so you receive individual attention and course includes a field trip as well as the studio work. Such good value for money – and learning from a professional photographer like Ben, I not only have a new respect for photography generally, I feel more confident to take my own shots in manual. For anyone remotely interested in photography, take this SPW course!

As a green ‘point and shoot’ photographer I now have more understanding and confidence to turn the dial. The composition and editorial tutorials were excellent. The field day was so worthwhile
